The detail

How we approach a heating or cooling repair

Most calls we get are not a dead system. They are a system that is running but no longer doing its job properly, which usually means one part rather than the whole unit. We diagnose before we quote so you are not paying to replace something that did not need replacing.

  1. Diagnostic firstWe test the unit rather than guessing from the symptom. Weak airflow, for example, can be a failing capacitor, a blocked filter, a refrigerant leak or a duct that has come adrift in the roof, and those are four very different repairs.
  2. The common faultsCapacitors, contactors, fan motors, thermostats, control boards, blocked or dirty filters, refrigerant leaks, split or crushed ducting, and on gas units the ignition and flame sensor. Most repairs land in that list.
  3. Repair or replace, said plainlyIf the repair is a large fraction of the cost of a new system, and the unit is near the end of its life, we say so. We would rather tell you that than take the repair job and see you again next winter.
  4. Servicing that prevents the call outA serviced system uses less power, lasts longer and is far less likely to fail on the first genuinely cold night, which is when everyone rings at once.

Common questions

Do you service systems you did not install?

Yes. We service and repair all the major brands regardless of who installed them or how old they are.

How often should a system be serviced?

Once a year is the sensible rule, ideally before the season you rely on it. Heating in autumn, cooling in spring, so a fault turns up while it is still a small problem.

My system is running but the house is not getting warm or cool. Why?

That is the most common call we take and it is almost always airflow or refrigerant rather than the unit itself. It is usually a repair, not a replacement.

Is it worth repairing an older system?

It depends on the fault and the age. We will give you the repair cost and the replacement cost side by side so the decision is yours with the real numbers in front of you.

Setting a home air conditioner to 21 degrees with a wall-mounted split system running in the background

Will your place cope with the first 38 degree day?

Four things worth checking now, while there is still time to do something about them. Two of these are a service, not a new system, and we will tell you which one you are looking at.

  • It struggles once the day passes 35 degrees.A system that cools fine in spring but never quite gets there in a heatwave is usually undersized for the space rather than faulty.
  • Some rooms never cool down.Normally a zoning or ductwork problem, not a reason to replace the whole system. Worth having someone look before you spend.
  • It has not been serviced since last summer.Filters and coils that have sat through winter are the most common reason a system underperforms on the first hot day.
  • It is more than ten years old.Older units lose capacity and cost more to run each summer. That is the point where replacing can be cheaper than another repair.
